Workplace Flexibility and Your Bottom Line
Workplace flexibility was once a “nice to have” benefit to employees, but it is now becoming a driver of business success. For employees facing growing traffic problems, dual career management and a generation placing greater emphasis on work-life balance, flexible work arrangements are more important than ever. For employers who depend on workers to drive value in the marketplace, flexible work arrangements have proven to enable greater engagement, overall employee health and well-being, and a desire to stay with the organization.
This panel of leaders from winners of the When Work Works Awards will share how they have facilitated flexible work arrangements and how it has benefited their organizations’ bottom lines.

Lisa Horn, as Director of Congressional Affairs, oversees and directs SHRM’s public policy activities on Capitol Hill on issues important to the HR profession. Lisa also co-directs SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative and partnership with the Families and Work Institute (FWI). She is responsible for the overall execution of the Society’s partnership with FWI, including outreach efforts to SHRM affiliates, development of products and services for the membership, and coordination with SHRM’s public relations campaign. As a respected source for research and trend data on flexible work environments, Lisa is one of SHRM’s primary spokespeople on workplace flexibility, regularly interviewed by the media and sought out as a speaker for human resource and business audiences. Since joining SHRM in 2004, Lisa has served as the organization’s chief lobbyist on health care and workplace flexibility public policy issues on Capitol Hill that impact the human resource profession. Prior to joining SHRM, Lisa worked for the U.S. House of Representatives under former Representatives Bill Barrett (R-NE) and Tom Osborne (R-NE). A native Nebraskan, Lisa began her career as a senatorial aide in the Nebraska Legislature, while completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Barbara Bell-Dees is the VP of Human Resources & People Services at NASCO. Barbara is charged with formulating the company's strategy for ongoing integrated talent management. She is focusing on developing NASCO's major competitive differentiator – its people. She has over twenty five years of experience in HR management and administration. Barbara has been with NASCO for eight years and has overseen the company’s exponential growth from 239 to 700 associates. In April, 2012, 2013, and 2014 NASCO was recognized by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as one of the Best Places to Work in the mid-size market. Also in 2014, NASCO was named as a local winner of the When Work Works award recognizing exemplary employers for creating effective workplaces to increase business and employee success.
Douglas DeRito is the Principal in Charge at Ryan in the Atlanta office. He specializes in providing multi-jurisdictional tax services in a variety of industries with focus on transaction tax and tax technology solutions. Doug is also responsible for assisting Ryan clients with the new Puerto Rico sales tax structure and providing best practice insights and regulatory guidance related to the new sales tax by meeting with the Commonwealth’s Treasury Department.
Karen Mathews is the Director of WorkLife Services for WellStar Health System in Marietta, Georgia. She is a graduate of Covenant College in Chattanooga, Tennessee with a degree in Organizational Management and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where she received her degree in Christian Education with a concentration in Adult Learning. Her responsibilities include the strategic oversight of worklife programs and services and strategic recommendations for the employer of choice initiative of this large integrated health system which consists of over 13,000 team members, five hospitals, nursing homes, two hospice facilities, health parks, imaging centers and Urgent Care Centers, a large medical group, and other patient services in a five county region of northwest Atlanta. Through Karen’s leadership and collaboration with WellStar’s human resources leadership team WellStar has consistently achieved recognition since 2008 as a great place to work with Companies That Care Honor Roll (6 years), Working Mother 100 Best Companies (7 years, Top Ten for 5 years) the Top 50 Companies for the National Association of Female Executives (4 years), Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility (5 years), AARP’s Best Employers for Workers over 50 (3 years) and Dave Thomas Adoption Friendly Workplace (4 years). Among her achievements at WellStar has been the successful implementation of a workplace flexibility program, FlexWorks, the launch of a comprehensive web-based discounts and purchasing program, WellStar Cents Marketplace and a leader training program on how to build a culture of trust.
After 12 years at Sability in various leadership positions, James Shryock currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer and VP of Services. Sability is a consulting firm specializing in Human Capital Management and Workforce Management Solutions. Before joining Sability in 2002, James was the Director of Human Resource Information Systems for Lend Lease, a global real estate company based in Australia, and HR Manager at Compass Management and Leasing, Inc.. An industry veteran, he spent many years in the trenches of HCM implementations with clients such as International Paper, Adidas, JB Hunt and Verizon. James has a master’s degree in Labor Relations and Human Resources and bachelor’s in Social Relations, both from Michigan State University.
